There is something wonderfully uncomplicated about exploring a destination on your own terms.

For Cam, Slovenia meant getting on a bike and exploring.

From Portorož he cycled into historic Piran, wandered its narrow old-town streets, climbed above the medieval walls for incredible views across the Adriatic and discovered the quieter coastline around Strunjan.

There were swims in the sea, coffee stops, walks, bike rides and evenings watching the sun disappear across the water.

And then onwards to Ljubljana.

This is one of the things we love about solo travel.

You don’t have to wait for somebody else to be ready before you start exploring the world.

Cam’s latest journey with Dreamovator took him deep into Slovenia’s spectacular Karst Region, a world created over millions of years beneath our feet.

From the legendary Postojna Cave, where an underground railway carries visitors through Europe’s largest show cave, to the mysterious “baby dragon” the rare olm that survives in complete darkness…

To Predjama Castle, a medieval fortress built directly into a 123-metre cliff face, where legends of secret tunnels and Slovenia’s own “Robin Hood” still live on…

And finally, the powerful beauty of Škocjan Caves where an underground river has carved one of the world’s greatest subterranean canyons.

🌍 Slovenia reminded Cam that the greatest adventures are often found in unexpected places.

This week, Cam from Dreamovator followed the footsteps of soldiers who fought on the legendary Soča (Isonzo) Front during the First World War.

From the preserved trenches high above the emerald Soča River to the Russian Road over the Vršič Pass, every viewpoint reveals another chapter of history.

With A Soldier on the Southern Front by Emilio Lussu and Caporetto and the Isonzo Campaign by John Macdonald as companions, the landscape comes alive. These aren’t just mountain trails—they were once front lines where thousands of Italian and Austro-Hungarian soldiers fought in one of history’s most challenging alpine battlefields.

Today, the churches stand peacefully, museums preserve the stories, and the crystal-clear river flows through a valley that has transformed from a place of conflict into one of Europe’s most breathtaking destinations.

Riding the cable car to Mount Vogel, standing high above the Julian Alps, hiking to the stunning Savica Waterfall, and flying through the valleys on one of Slovenia’s longest zipline adventures made this an experience to remember.

The journey wasn’t without its challenges—long drives, mountain storms, pushing a bike over rough terrain, and nights spent sleeping in the van—but that’s what makes adventure worthwhile.

Of course, no visit to Bled is complete without sampling the famous Bled Cream Cake, enjoying a coffee overlooking the lake, and ending the day watching glowing night kayakers glide across the water.

One of the best hikes I’ve ever done! 🇸🇮

Yesterday I climbed Mount Triglav (2,864m), the highest mountain in Slovenia and the Julian Alps.

For many Slovenians, reaching the summit is a lifelong ambition—and after spending 13 hours on the mountain, I can see why.

🥾 Started at 5:00am
⏰ Finished at 6:00pm

The final climb isn’t just hiking. The last section is a via ferrata, where you’re attached to steel cables as you make your way along an exposed ridge to the summit. It’s challenging, exhilarating and definitely not one for anyone who doesn’t like heights!

The reward? Incredible panoramic views across the Julian Alps that make every step worthwhile.

💡 Traveller Tips
• Start early to avoid afternoon storms.
• Wear proper hiking boots.
• Take at least 2–3 litres of water.
• If you’re new to via ferrata, consider hiring a local guide.

Mount Triglav is one of Europe’s most iconic mountain adventures and a must-do for experienced hikers visiting Slovenia.

After decades opening hotels and delivering incentive travel programmes, I’ve become very picky about destinations.

In fact, I’ve walked away from some very famous hotel brands because they didn’t go the extra mile. If they don’t treat me well when I visit, I know they won’t treat my clients any better.

That’s why Costa Adeje in Tenerife really stood out.
